Roof Work Equipment from A to Z 🦺⛑️
When making your selection, it's important to remember that a complete fall protection system consists of 3 basic elements (the A-B-C system):
- A - Anchorage: A fixed point to which you secure yourself.
- B - Body Support: The fall arrest harness you are wearing.
- C - Connection: The lanyard, energy absorber, carabiners – what connects the harness to the anchorage point. All these parts must be certified and mutually compatible.
Basic Equipment (The essential minimum for roof work)
This is the minimum you need for fall protection.
1. Full Body Fall Arrest Harness (EN 361)
Must have both a front (sternal) and a rear (dorsal) attachment point for fall arrest. For work on a pitched roof, a harness that also has side D-rings for work positioning (EN 358) is ideal.
- SINGING ROCK ROOF MASTER: As the name suggests, this is a harness specifically designed for roofers. It is lightweight, does not restrict movement, and has all the necessary attachment points.
- PETZL NEWTON EASYFIT: A top-of-the-line, very comfortable harness for long-term work. An excellent choice if you spend a lot of time on the roof. The Easyfit version has FAST LT buckles, which make it easier to put on.
- CAMP FOCUS VEST XT: A basic, lightweight full-body harness that is ideal for work on roofs, platforms, or building structures.
2. Energy Absorber with a Double Lanyard (a "Y-lanyard") (EN 355)
This allows you to remain constantly connected to an anchor point, even when moving from one place to another (e.g., crossing a ridge, moving around a chimney).
- PETZL ABSORBICA-Y MGO: The industry standard. The version with large MGO connectors is ideal for connecting to structures, scaffolding, and the like.
- SINGING ROCK REACTOR 140 Y: A great and more affordable alternative. You can choose a version with different types of carabiners as needed.
- CAMP SHOCK ABSORBER: A reliable energy absorber that performs its function well.
3. Mobile Fall Arrester on a Rope (EN 353-2)
This is key for working on a pitched roof. You create a temporary safety line from the ridge downwards. You move along this rope, and the device will lock immediately in the event of a slip or fall.
- PETZL ASAP LOCK: The absolute top of the market. It works reliably in both vertical and angled use. The LOCK version has a locking function, which is advantageous if you need to keep the rope taut.
- SINGING ROCK LOCKER: A proven and reliable fall arrester. Simple to use and very effective. It is used with an 11 mm diameter rope and an energy absorber.
- CAMP GOBLIN: An innovative device that is very gentle on the rope, even when arresting a severe fall.
4. Anchorage Device (EN 795-B)
You need something to create a secure anchor point, for example, around a chimney, a roof truss in the attic, or another solid structure.
- SINGING ROCK JINGLE II or EYE SLING: A steel cable or a highly durable textile sling. Ideal for creating an anchor point around thicker structures.
- PETZL CONNEXION VARIO: An adjustable anchor strap that can be perfectly adapted to the required length around a structure.
- CAMP ANCHOR CABLE: An anchor device made of 6 mm steel cable with high strength and abrasion resistance.
Supplementary Equipment
These items are not always required by legislation, but they significantly increase comfort and safety.
1. Industrial Helmet (EN 397)
Protects the head not only from a fall but also from falling objects (tiles, tools). It must have a chinstrap to prevent it from falling off during a fall.
- PETZL VERTEX or STRATO: Very comfortable and proven helmets. The industry standard.
- SINGING ROCK BLAST: A lightweight, super comfortable, and ventilated helmet at a good price.
- EDELRID TECTUM: A modern, functionally equipped industrial safety helmet.
2. Work Positioning Lanyard (EN 358)
If your harness has side D-rings, this is a fantastic tool on a pitched roof. It allows you to set the precise length of the rope and lean into the harness, leaving both hands free for work without losing stability.
- PETZL GRILLON: The most well-known and popular positioning device. Simple and smooth length adjustment, even under load.
- SINGING ROCK SITE: A functionally very similar and reliable solution.
- CAMP DRUID LANYARD: Another high-quality and adjustable alternative.
3. Static Rope (EN 1891 Type A)
You need this for the mobile fall arrester. I recommend a diameter of 10.5 or 11 mm. Choose the length based on the most common height of the roofs you work on (e.g., 20-30 meters).
- PETZL PARALLEL 10.5 mm: An excellent rope with a long service life.
- SINGING ROCK STATIC R44 11.0 mm: A very durable and popular "workhorse" rope.
- BEAL CONTRACT 10.5 mm: Proven quality from a rope specialist.
4. Locking Carabiners (EN 362)
You will need several of these to connect different parts of your equipment. Always use carabiners with a locking gate (screw-lock, twist-lock, triact-lock). HMS or oval-shaped carabiners are ideal for connecting to the harness.
- PETZL OK TRIACT-LOCK or Am'D BALL-LOCK: Symmetrical and D-shaped carabiners with an automatic locking gate.
- SINGING ROCK OXY or OVAL: Quality carabiners with a screw-lock gate.
- CAMP OVAL PRO LOCK: A reliable oval carabiner.
5. Rope Protector and Gear Bag
- Rope Protector: A simple "sleeve" that you place on the rope where it comes into contact with a sharp edge (e.g., the edge of the roof, a ridge tile). (e.g., PETZL PROTEC, SINGING ROCK ROPE PROTECTOR).
- Gear Bag: A strong and durable bag in which you will carry and store all your equipment. (e.g., PETZL TRANSPORT 45L, SINGING ROCK GEAR BAG).
Important Final Notes!
- Training: The equipment itself is not enough. It is essential to undergo professional training for working at height, where you will learn how to use and inspect the equipment correctly and how to set up a safe system.
- Regular Inspection: Before each use, visually inspect all your equipment (check textile parts for cuts, abrasion, and stitching; check metal parts for deformation and proper gate function). In addition, a regular inspection by a competent person is required by law.
- Rescue Plan: Always have a plan for what you will do if a colleague falls and is left suspended in their harness. A swift rescue is crucial.
